Spend an hour star gazing

Why do it?

It’s beautiful. It makes you feel tiny. It’s interesting. You might see a shooting star. You never know, navigating by the stars might come in handy some day.

How to do this in Bristol

Choose a night without a moon. Find a dark spot without too many street lights. Bring something to sit on and some warm clothes. Bring something to help you identify the constellations.

What you will need

  • A star chart

  • A really dark sky

  • A good pair of eyes (telescope or binoculars optional)

Safety tips

Let an adult know where you plan to go, when and what time to expect you home. It’s going to be dark so plan how you are going to get there and back safely, maybe you can arrange a lift. Take a friend or family member if you can. Choose a place to stargaze that you feel safe - you will want somewhere dark and open, but not too remote.

Remember that the temperature falls at night, so make sure you have plenty of warm clothes to stop you getting cold, and maybe even a flask of hot soup!
