Why do it?

Making someone smile and brightening their day is one of the most generous things you can do. It has a ripple effect that touches the whole community - if you are nice to someone they're much more likely to be nice to others as well.

You can take responsibility for making your world a happier place, and it can start with something as small as a smile.

Let’s make Bristol a happier city!

How to do this in Bristol

There are loads of ways you can make someone smile here are a few examples:

  • Smile first (the easiest and possibly the most effective way to get someone to smile is to smile at them first).

  • Be chivalrous (behave in a kind and courteous way to people) good manners make people smile.

  • Surprise someone (with a kind gesture or a personal present that you made).

  • Tell them your favourite jokes.

  • Give someone a compliment (about what they do or how they look).

What you will need

  • Your best smile

  • A bit of courage to tell a stranger a joke

Safety tips

By definition a stranger is someone you don’t know, so while you shouldn’t get overly paranoid do show some caution. However you choose to make a stranger smile choose a public place to do it and be selective about who you choose - maybe someone you see every morning on the way to school or work, or who works in your local shop who you see all the time but have never actually talked to.
